Mining Commissioned Report Finds Subsidy Level Far Lower Than Previously Claimed

Castalia was commissioned by representatives of the mining and resources sector in Australia to repspond to a report prepared b the Australia Institute (AI), an independent think thank, which had claimed that the sector benefited from subsidies from state and Territory Governments to the tune of AU$17.6 billion over a six year period. Castalia's analysis found the AI's work to be fundamentally flawed, and concluded that the actual level of subsidy was relatively trivial, amounting to no more than a few percentage points of the amount claimed. The mining and resources sector ran a wide media campaign on the back of Castalia's report, which was quoted in the country's largest circulation newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, amongst others. Michael Schur, Managing Director, was interviewed on national radio.
