Castalia Provides Successful Expert Economic Evidence in Environmental Protection Agency Hearing

In October 2014, an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hearing was held into Chatham Rock Phosphate Ltdís proposal to mine rock phosphate from the seabed off the South Island of New Zealand.

Castaliaís executive director Alex Sundakov, on behalf of Ngai Tahu and the Deepwater Group, presented expert economic evidence regarding the proposal. His evidence concluded that the net economic benefits of the proposal were uncertain and there were significant potential negative effects that should be considered. The evidence highlighted the potential negative effects of the proposal on the fisheries industry and on New Zealandís image. The Decision-making Committee (DMC) appointed by the EPA released its decision to reject the proposal in February 2015. Please click here to view the DMCís decision.
